 Why Big Mouth 's Animation Matters In 2017, Big Mouth was released on Netflix; it was an animated perspective on puberty and growing older; and at the core of its storytelling is the accessibility that only animation could provide. Big Mouth takes on a period of change and growing up that is unique to every individual and attempts to understand it within an animated world.   Big Mouth follows a group of 11–13-year-olds in middle school who are learning about sex, their bodies, how to fall in love, and how to grow up. It’s graphic and hilarious and doesn’t shy away from…anything. Big Mouth also doesn’t deal in realism; it’s not a Disney-style animated show that is attempting to mimic the realities of turning 12 years old and figuring out how to use a tampon. Winsor McCay & the Education of Animation

Who was Winsor McCay?  Winsor McCay was an American artist who developed his techniques in the field of comic strip drawing into the production of short animation features. While McCay’s works were simplistic by the standards of today’s designs, it is McCay who is considered “the father of animation” (Illustration History).     Without his contribution to the art form, we wouldn’t have the style of animation that has come to exist through Disney animation studios or any other major animation studios.   McCay developed the style of animation called “Personality Animation” (Furniss, 40). This animation took the concepts of the art form, which had previously just been used to animate illustrated images, and instead emphasized story and character. These characters displayed personality—making them both memorable and entertaining.
